"Border Biscuits Foundation is a community initiative set up to support local good causes across a wide range of activity. We hope that our project will also have the added benefit of encouraging the involvement of Border Biscuits' employees in some of the initiatives we support, and promote community participation in general. To this end, in November 2007 we established a partnership with CCI in the form of volunteering days for our team here in Lanark.

In exchange for a 'day out of the factory' we work alongside different client groups on community landscaping projects. This has become a monthly event, and most of the staff who have been on one of the volunteering days are only too happy to have another go, despite working outdoors in all weathers. The days are always well organised and the positive feedback we receive shows that our staff really enjoy not only the hard work, but also the teamwork element involved in these events and the sense of satisfaction in contributing to their community. For instance, driving past the Gateway at Carnwath, or Loudon Pond, we can say 'we did that.

Our partnership with CCI is a great opportunity to learn about people from different backgrounds and work with them on an equal basis. It can sometimes take a little time to establish relationships with some of the client groups, but it has been extremely rewarding to find that our volunteers come back from their hard day's graft saying 'they are just the same as me and you'.

We have been impressed by CCI's commitment to social integration and consequential level of participation with all of its client groups, encouraging the sharing of skills and experience. We have also been impressed with their standard of work: the end result does not reflect the fact that the majority of the labour is unskilled. It just takes a bit longer to get the job done.

CCI took on board our Foundation's key objectives and came up with a proposal that helps us achieve our aims in a really practical, straightforward and business-like way. Our relationship has proved to be both effective and encouraging and we look forward to developing our partnership in the long term."
